Richmond Young Writers’ Spring Intensives introduce young writers to the art and joy of creative writing. Students may bring their own journals, or if they prefer, have one provided for them. Student work from each class will culminate in a zine or book that young writers will be able to take home at the end of each session. We can’t wait to work with young writers- old and new!
Scholarships!
This spring, we have eight full scholarship opportunities available for young writers who might not otherwise have the chance to write with us. In order to apply for a scholarship, young writers should email a paragraph about why they love writing to richmondyoungwriters@gmail.com two weeks prior to the class they would like to attend. Scholarships will be awarded on a “first come, first served” basis.

Chop Suey Books
Does your ballerina have a mohawk and like to play chess in the desert? Is your Uncle Bob a rock star living in Atlantis? Individually and together we’ll create as many zany, bizarre and seriously silly characters as our imaginations will allow, giving each creation lives, stories and poems of their own.

Katniss Everdeen doesn’t sound like Hermione Granger, who definitely doesn’t sound like Frodo Baggins. To make your characters really come alive, they’ve got to speak like real people: with their own dialects, slang, speech patterns and vocabulary! Learn how to make it happen as we explore writing, listening and partner exercises designed to sharpen up your casts of unique voices.

Seriously Surreal, ages 11-13
Wednesdays, March 7-28, 4:30-6pm with Valley Haggard
Chop Suey Books
In the world of surrealism, sometimes two plus two equals a purple biker gang playing Twister on the moon. Time folds, walls melt and people are easily mistaken for large broccoli trees. Play with language and bend the rules as you know them to create stories and poems that are truly “above reality.”

Poetry & The Real World, ages 14-16
Tuesdays, March 13 - April 3 with Bird Cox
Chop Suey Books
Many modern poets depend on atmospheres, voices and the experience of living their regular daily lives for the kind of rich material that transforms wildly on the page. We’ll be reading a few ‘real world’ poets for inspiration, then developing our mundane experiences into a collection of vivid, revelatory free-form poems.

Giant Squid Inc. features a different method of combining writing and art each session, and in this class, we’ll be creating our own stamp blocks with which to print images that correlate to our written work! Did that really just happen? You can’t make this stuff up! Sometimes the world that we experience is even stranger than the world we read about. Using our own dreams, observations and memories we’ll write our truths and then experiment with transforming those truths into flash fiction, stories and vignettes.
